Creations Magazine has been the holistic living magazine for New York City and Long Island since 1985, read today by more than 80,000 people a month in print and online. Forty years in, it has a new format: native apps on the App Store and Google Play, free, with no paywall a few pieces in.
The apps were designed and built in house by our team, native on each platform, and they run on the same platform the magazine’s website does.

Creations has always been something people read slowly. They keep issues, they come back to a piece, they pass it to a friend. A phone is usually the opposite of that, all noise and interruption. We wanted an app that felt like the magazine: quiet, beautiful, and made for the words. Forty years in, it deserves nothing less.

A reading experience first
Made to be read. Every piece is typeset for the phone, in the magazine’s own type. Readers set a text size that suits their eyes and choose light, dark, or follow the phone.
New writing, as it lands. The day’s pieces at the top, and every section a tap away: spirituality, holistic health, poetry, personal growth and the rest of the magazine.
Keep what stays with you. Save a piece and it comes along, readable on a train, in a waiting room, or anywhere the signal fails.
What is on, and when. The events calendar, laid out by the day: classes, workshops, meditations and retreats worth putting in the week.
Years of it, searchable. Hundreds of articles, findable in a couple of words, for the essay you half remember and want again.
The circles, in your pocket
Creations has always been a community as much as a magazine. The app brings it along.

The circles are moderated rooms where readers talk about what they are actually practicing, from morning rituals to what they are reading. Readers can join from the app, and comment on the pieces themselves. It is conversation with a purpose, kept kind by people who read every room.
The circles are my favorite part of this. The best thing about Creations has never been a single article, it is the people reading it. Putting those conversations on the phone, right next to the writing that started them, is what makes this more than a magazine on a screen.

A calm, considered home for advertisers
For forty years, Creations advertisers have been practitioners, studios, wellness brands and local businesses whose customers are exactly the magazine’s readers. The app gives them a new place to be seen, on the same terms readers already trust.
One campaign, every screen. Advertising in the app runs on the same first-party ad system as the website. A single placement reaches readers on the web, on iPhone and on Android, with one creative and one report.
The magazine’s own advertising, and only that. Creations sells and serves its own ads. There is no ad network, no advertising tracker, and no stranger’s ad slipped in beside a piece on meditation. Every placement is chosen for this audience and clearly labeled as sponsored.
The right room. A wellness brand next to a thoughtful essay, in an app somebody installed because they value the magazine, is worth more than any number of impressions somewhere noisier.
Readers can tell when an ad belongs somewhere and when it does not. Everything advertised in Creations belongs in Creations, and the app is built to keep it that way. For an advertiser that means their message arrives in a calm, trusted place, in front of people who chose to be there. That is rare now, and it is valuable.

Built on Wave Publisher
Creations runs on Wave Publisher, the platform we built for our own titles. One set of articles, one calendar, one set of circles and one ad system serve the website and both apps, so a piece published in the morning is everywhere by the time anyone reaches for their phone.
