A year ago Wave Agency published one local title. Long Island Wave covered Nassau and Suffolk, and if you wanted to advertise in it, you called us. This fall it gained two sisters, Gold Coast Wave for South Florida and New York City Wave for the five boroughs, both launched in the same month on the web, the App Store and Google Play.
Launching two publications in one month was the test. It worked because none of them is built by hand. They are one publishing system, one ad platform and one newsroom process, wearing a different name for each place. Today that system has a front door of its own: Wave Locals, the home of the network and the one place to advertise in any part of it.
What Wave Locals is
Wave Locals does two jobs. For readers, it is the hub of every Wave publication: the latest stories from each region, links to every title and app, and one place to submit an event, a news tip or a story to any of them. For businesses, it is an ad platform. You pick the publications you want, pick a plan and pay once. That single order runs your ads in every title you chose.
There is no media kit to request, no insertion order to sign and no rep to chase. The whole thing is self-serve:
- Pick your Waves. One publication or all of them, in the same order.
- Pick a plan. Spotlight puts a square card in the article grids readers browse. Banner runs full-width units sitewide. Spotlight + Banner runs both, everywhere.
- Pay by card. Monthly plans cancel any time, and a year costs ten months.
- Get your creative made. Upload finished artwork, or have our studio design it free from your logo. You approve the proof in your account before anything runs.
- Watch it work. Your account at ads.wavelocals.com shows impressions and clicks for every ad in every publication, plus billing and the plan itself.
Plans start at $79 a publication a month, and adding publications lowers what each one costs you. Sponsored articles, written with each publication’s newsroom and always labeled as sponsored, and event boosts on each calendar sit alongside the plans. The current rate card is on the Wave Locals advertise page.
Why one buy matters
Most local advertising is sold one outlet at a time, by people, on paper. A business that serves customers on Long Island and in Queens, or has a location in Boca Raton as well as Melville, ends up negotiating with every outlet separately, sending artwork in five sizes, and reading five different reports that count different things.
Wave Locals collapses that into one order and one report. The ad server behind it is our own, the same one we described in What a Modern Publication Runs On. It decides which ad fills each slot as the page is served, matches each placement to the right shape of creative, and counts impressions and clicks on our own server rather than through a tracking pixel. There is no third-party ad tag on any Wave publication, no auction taking a cut, and nothing following a reader from site to site. Your money buys placements in front of local readers, and the numbers you see are the ones that happened.
Four new publications a month
Here is where it gets interesting. Starting now, we plan to open around four new publications a month.
Some will be regional, like the three we have now: a local title for a place, covering its news, its openings, its events and its weekends. Others will be built around a topic instead of a map, and will read the same in Denver as in Brooklyn. We already know that shape works. Creations Magazine, our holistic living title, has been in print for four decades and draws its readers by subject, not by zip code.
Every new title joins Wave Locals the day it launches. That changes what an ad buy is. A business that advertises today is buying into a network that will be larger next month, with new regions to reach and new audiences gathered around the subjects they care about. A regional title reaches everyone in a place. A topic title reaches the people in every place who care about one thing. One network lets you buy either, or both, in the same order.
Why we can do this, and most publishers cannot
Starting a publication usually means hiring a newsroom, licensing a content system, signing with an ad network and building an app, then doing all of it again for the next one. That is why most local outlets never open a second title.
We built the opposite. Every Wave runs on Wave Publisher, the platform we wrote: one codebase shared by every title, so a fix or a feature written for one publication reaches all of them. Adding a publication is a new entry in a registry and its own database, not a new project. One admin runs every title’s stories, events, ads and readers. The sites, the apps and the ad server run on Cloudflare’s network, close to readers wherever they are, so the twentieth publication costs us about what the second did. AI does the research, the first drafts and the scheduling at a pace no traditional newsroom could match, and editors decide what runs. We cover how that division of work holds up in AI That Cannot Make Things Up.
The result is a network that grows on schedule rather than on headcount. Each launch makes the others stronger: readers move between titles, stories travel to the publications where they matter, and every advertiser’s reach grows without a new contract.
Get in early
The best time to join a network that grows every month is before it does. Advertise across every Wave today at wavelocals.com, and your ads will be in place as each new publication launches. If your business needs something larger, from a sponsored series to a presence in a topic title built around your industry, book a call and we will plan it with you.
And if you run a publication of your own, the platform underneath all of this is licensable. Wave Publisher is the same system, ready for your title.
